Configuring StumbleUpon for Safari
Posted: September 14th, 2008, 8:16 pm
I am a big fan of Safari, and like other fans of Safari, I sure wanted to use StumbleUpon, which sadly only "officially" works for FireFox on the Mac and IE on Windows. There is a way to get around this though, and that is with the Stumbi plug-in from Soya Software. For convenience, I've included the latest version as of this writing as an attachment. Below are the steps to get it installed and working correctly:
- Register a StumbleUpon account, if you haven't already. Skip the prompt to download the official StumbleUpon, since we will not be using it.
- Download Stumbi. Version 0.92 is attached to this post, but there may be a newer version at the Stumbi website.
- Install Stumbi by opening the installation package. It's probably a good idea to quit Safari if it's running before doing this.
- Now, launch Safari and you'll see a "Stumbi" menu as well as StumbleUpon buttons in the toolbar. Before Stumbi will work, you need to configure it to use your StumbleUpon account. Click on the Stumbi menu and choose Settings. Enter your StumbleUpon username and password in the box that appears, and click save.
- Now, you should be ready to Stumble! Click the StumbelUpon button in Safari (with an SU icon) to randomly go to a website you might enjoy. If it doesn't work, says it cannot connect to StumbleUpon, or something similar, try quitting and relaunching Safari.
