The problem described with disk drive position is in fact a common
problem with Apple drives in general. My Apple ][+ and its drives are
really quite position dependent. I suspect Apple just doesn't test for
that kind of problem. It is usually very easy to solve by just changing
some aspect of the field in the area around the computer -- metal foil
does great or even a medium to large cat.
