Folks, one of you replied and saved my life. Macintosh has a built-in
Scavanger feature. It is activated by holding down the option and cloverleaf
(maybe just option) buttons while a diskette is booting. Apparently the entire
directory is rebuild from scratch. It saved my diskette and about 20 hours of
work.
