Subject: [*] IPNetMonitor 1.7 Macintosh Internet Tools

IPNetMonitor provides a set of nine integrated Internet
tools which allow Macintosh users to monitor their
connection to the Internet. The tools are designed to help
users quickly identify problems, locate where the problem
is, and gather data which can be used to solve the problem,
either directly or through their Internet Service Provider.
The tools include Test Connectivity (Ping), Trace Route,
Name Server Lookup, Who Is, Finger, Monitor, TCP Info,
Address Scan, and Subnet Calculator.

With IPNetMonitor, you can see how the Internet is working,
monitor the flow of data to and from your computer, and
trace the route by which the data is flowing. This gives the
user the information to both optimize internet service and
diagnose problems. Once you have located a problem, the
tool's Who Is feature gives you the name, and often the
email address, of the person responsible for that part of
the network.

IPNetMonitor Features:
* A complete basic Internet toolkit (ping, traceroute, nslookup, whois).
* Unique OT native Monitor tool provides an accurate view of network
throughput and responsiveness.
* Full Macintosh user interface makes these tools more accessible.
* Asynchronous DNS lookups make trace route quick and easy.
* Tight design uses screen space efficiently.
Drag-&-Drop, or edit in place.
* Superior integration.
Automatically transfers corresponding data from one tool to another.
Supports GURL Apple Event.

The well organized displays and integrated design allow both new
and experienced Internet users to see how the net is working, and
quickly identify and report common problems.

System requirements:
=7F=7F=7F=7F MacOS 7.5.3 and Open Transport 1.1.1 or later

Subject: [*] Navigator Button Editor 1.3.3J - Japanese Version

This is the Japanese version of the Navigator Button Editor package.

Navigator Button Editor was written to customize those six less-than-lovable
directory buttons in Netscape Navigator. It has now been upgraded to
customize and expand the "Guide" button pop-up menu in Communicator 4 up to
100 custom menu items (if you have the strength to type that many in!).

You can now edit the default Search URL in Navigator and Communicator
versions 4.x!

Netscape Navigator / Communicator versions supported:

Navigator Button Editor supports Mac OS Netscape Navigator version 1.1N
through 3.x and Netscape Navigator/Communicator 4.03. Future versions will
certainly be supported when necessary. (It would be nice if Netscape would
build this function into Navigator for we dedicated Mac folk.)

Version 1.3.3

- A few enhancements in response to user feedback, including:

- Added confirmation dialogs before reverting to factory or previous settings

- Added an "Extras" menu to allow the user to edit the search URL for
Navigator/Communicator 4.x

- Adding to the Guide menu will now insert a new item in the Guide pop-up
menu after the currently selected item

- Adding and removing separator lines in the Guide menu is now a bit more
user friendly

- Fixed a minor Balloon Help faux pas

Subject: [*] Truss 6.0.2 demo

Truss 6.0.2 Demo. Developed by Hussam A. Dandashli.
11/01/97

Truss 6 is an application that explores the behavior of planar trusses
under external loading. It builds, analyzes, and displays the internal
forces in the members using color intensities to denote force values.
This new version replaces version 5.x. It will run on any Mac (PPC and
68k) with 68020 or better processor and the QuickTime extension
installed to be able to produce movies of a car traveling over the
truss.

New in version 6.0.2

* Minor update relating to showing the correct version of the
application in the About Application... menu and the truss window title.

New in version 6.0.1

* The application was rewritten in C++ using Symantec C++ visual
architecture.
* Balloon help is enabled.
* Shortcut buttons and the color scale reside on floating pallets.
* Truss colors as well as background and foreground colors can be
selected by the user.
* Pattern display has been disabled. Only colors are available.
* The animation of the car traveling over the truss is done in a
separate window.
* The entire truss can be moved with the mouse.
* Applied nodal forces can be assigned by double-clicking a node..
* The full version can be unlocked with a serial number instead of
waiting for a full version.
* Some menu items were rearranged, and some were dropped altogether.
* When printing, the truss will be centered and resized to fit on one
page.
* The console window was dropped. The forces text can be exported to a
file when needed.
* Automatic snap to grid functionality has been added.
* Method of sections has been dropped since the truss is analyzed
automatically. Only the
method of joints will be used to display joint and/or supports free
body diagrams.
This demo version is restricted to 4 joints, can build but cannot solve
trusses.

Subject: [q] Force a Color Depth?

I am trying to find out if there is a way to trick a program
into thinking the monitor is set to a specific color depth. The video card
I have supports from b/w to 256 colors, plus millions, and some programs
won't operate without thousands.
There is no choice for thousands, so if i can somehow force the program
to operate in millions, I'd be grateful to know how.
Some programs give a 'run anyway' option, the ones I'm trying quit because
it's set different and they can't change it. (Obsidian, Riven, etc.)

Subject: [Q] MacOS 8.0 Problem

Hello. I have a strange problem with MacOS 8.0. Ever since I installed the
system, I sometimes get a strange alert from the finder saying something
like: "Not enough memory to fulfill the request. Quit applications to free
memory". This alert normally appear when other applications are in the
foreground. And I always have plenty of free RAM.

It seems like what happens is that an application asks the system about
some extra temporary memory and for some reason the system won't approve of
the request although there are plenty of free RAM.

ANy ideas of how to fix this?

Applications that causes this problem: Acrobate Reader 3.1, CodeWarrior IDE
2.0, Microsoft IE 3

fyi

when you enter names into AppleCD Audio Player, it will remember them as
long as you keep it's prefs file, named _CD Remote Programs_. (it also
remembers your last _program_ selection order!) it stores these as
resources (editable with ResEdit) sorted by an ID# associated with a
particular cd.

there is the program _CD Coyote_ (on the november macaddict cd #15) that
will help you manage the prefs file, and will also merge several preference
files into one, allowing you & your friends to share.

note that sometimes two cd's containing the same recording will have
different id #'s, so just because a friend has the same cd, that doesn't
necessarily mean AppleCD Audio Player will recognize it as the same. this
is a result of the many different pressings and the limited information
available from most audio cds.

so, at the least you can enter in all of your own cd collection and save a
backup of the prefs file. that is what i have done, although i took my time
doing it for obvious reasons. :)

ps: about the AppleCD Audio Player (for those who didn't know.) turn on
_balloon help_ (? menu) and point to the various controls to see their
command key equivalents. this might be in the appleguide doc as well....

hope this helps...

I've done the same thing more times than I care to admit. Apparently

Mark,
I apologise if you have been swamped by now, but I only saw one answer to
your question. I've been a happy user of a "Mouse Systems" all-optical
mouse now for about six years. No cleaning, no skipping, no sticking, no
jumping; standard ADB connection. About the only disadvantage is that you
have to use an optical mouse pad, so you don't get to keep any of the
cool/clever/cute pads that keep showing up in the mail.

I have a powerbook 140 that I am trying to revive. I think the hard disk

It also will not boot from any external drives that I have tried hooking up.
It will almost complete the boot process but then quits with an empty,
flashing dialog box. Does anyone know where I could get a floppy to boot this
140 from or anything else I could try? What would I have to do to open it up
and disconnect the internal hard drive in case the crashed drive is preventing
it from booting from a floppy or external drive?
