My wife experienced similar troubles with only a couple of fonts.
Disk spins forever (almost), takes forever to respond to mouse, etc.
Troubles seemed to be associated with use of multiple big fonts on
the same line, as the MacWrite document got too large. We finally
decided that the system was swapping fonts on/off disk as memory
became too tight. Solution was to edit the font causing the trouble
(her personal variant of Cairo with additional musical notation in
it) to cut down its size, and to split the document so that MacWrite
wasn't so crowded. Otherwise, exotic font characters would show up
in default font at random times, when the disk wasn't wearing itself
out.
